When A and I heard the news we were heading back to Perth, we decided to cancel our trip home in December and use our annual leave to explore the New South Wales coastline while we were on this side of the country. I’ve always wanted to head to Hunter Valley, just north of Sydney, which is well-known for its wine region. Even though I hadn’t decided on the wineries I wanted to visit, I knew that Muse Dining was a must-visit while we were there.
Muse Dining is located at Hungerford Hill Winery and is an award-winning restaurant that has been awarded Two Chef Hats in the 2015 Good Food Guide. They are mostly known for their Tasting Menu, however they also offer a two or three course menu as well. We opted for the two course menu ($75 per person), as we had a large lunch at Cipro Pizza al Taglio in Sydney on our way to the Hunter Valley.
To start with, we ordered a glass of the 2010 Hungerford Hill ‘Dalliance’ sparkling. It seemed only right to order wine from the winery Muse Dining is located within.
For my entree, I ordered the Desiree Potato Gnocchi ‘Risotto’, made with gorgonzola custard, walnut, pickled baby king brown mushroom. Not only was the plating beautiful, but the potato and gorgonzola custard provided a creamy texture that suited the mushrooms perfectly. A beautiful, seemingly simple start to our evening.
For my main, I chose the Milly Hill Lamb, which was served pink and came with sweetcorn cream, garlic scapes, chives, flowers, anchovy and mustard. The lamb was tender and went perfectly with the interesting flavour combination of anchovy and sweet corn. The sweetness mixed with the strong, pungent flavour was an interesting choice, but I loved the uniqueness and that I was able to experience a new flavour combination.
A ordered the Slow Cooked Berkshire Pork served with carrot spice roasted and juice, goats mascarpone and cumquat. For A, the pork was the standout but she enjoyed the carrot and goats mascarpone accompaniment as well.
Muse Dining impressed A and I immensely. The food was fantastic but the ambiance and service were top-notch, making the whole experience memorable. If you are in the Hunter Valley area, I assure you that Muse Dining is worth a visit.
