When A and I were in Perth, we often ate at pubs but for some reason, we don’t do this as often in Canberra. However, we seem to have found a favourite with Public in Manuka.
A is a fan of the slow cooked lamb with quinoa tabouli, mint yoghurt, fresh pomegranate and pistachio crumble ($23) and orders this every time we head to Public. The salad always comes with a very generous serving of lamb, and A loves the flavour combination within this dish.
I’ve become a fan of the avocado and pea guacamole with tortilla chips ($12), which is sprinkled with tabasco sauce and has a kick of flavour. Don’t let the tortilla chips fool you; there is plenty of guacamole underneath the plentiful and freshly made tortillas.
We also love the beer battered chips ($10) with sweet chilli and sour cream, which are the big, chunky chips.
When our guests were here for the Visit Canberra’s VIP Human Brochure Weekend, A and I took them to Public for dinner. We had a fantastic night sitting outside, eating and chatting. My two guests opted for the Fish and Chips ($21) and although they loved the beer battered fish, they were disappointed that the fries were not the chunky, beer battered version but instead were shoestring fries. I don’t blame them for being disappointed – those beer battered chips are amazing!
On that occasion, I ordered the salt and pepper squid salad ($21), featuring shredded iceberg, fresh chilli, crisp basil and nam jim dressing. I loved this salad and the generous serving of squid.
All in all, we enjoy eating at Public. The food is decent and you can normally get a table – but the beer battered chips are what we keep coming back for.
