I’ve been a fan of the Chocolateria San Churros chain for a few years now and I am over the moon that they have opened an outlet in Canberra. In Perth, I was a frequent visitor of San Churros, mainly due to my friends being chocolate and ice cream aficionados as well, so it was the perfect place to meet up or end an evening out.
I love San Churros so much that when I learnt that A and I were making the move to Canberra, one of the first things I did was look up whether there was a San Churros in Canberra. I kid you not – it was a very important aspect of the move. You can imagine my disappointment when I realised that there wasn’t an outlet in Canberra, but thankfully the Woden outlet opened in April, only 9 months after our arrival!
It took A and I a while to get to San Churros in Woden, mainly due to my reluctance to head out in the Canberra cold (I’m adapting –slowly!) but a few weeks ago, A took me for a date night excursion. I’m happy to say that the Woden outlet did not disappoint.
The San Churros menu consists of sundaes, tasting plates, churros, various versions of hot chocolate, cakes and truffles – all made with couverture chocolate from the finest cocoa beans and 100% pure cocoa butter. A’s order of churros for one ($8.95) with melted dark couverture chocolate and a side of strawberries ($3) arrived very quickly after we ordered and A was pleasantly surprised at how long the churros were. She asked me to help her, and I was more than happy to snag one while waiting for my sundae. The churros were crispy and not doughy at all -absolutely perfect (and delicious!).
I ordered my favourite sundae on the menu (and I’ve tried a lot!) – the choc banana sundae ($11.95), featuring banana, chocolate ice cream, melted milk chocolate, 3 ‘mini’ churros, whipped cream and nuts. After a slight mix up with the order, my sundae arrived ten minutes after A’s churros but I wasn’t fussed – the ‘mini’ churros were definitely larger than the usual mini churros this sundae comes with but no complaint from me. The ice cream had melted slightly but regardless, this sundae was a fantastic version that had my perfect ratio of ice cream, melted chocolate and churros (i.e. lots of each!).
I really enjoyed our trip to San Churros, however I was slightly disappointed with was the service. We waited at the door to be approached by a staff member so we could be seated for at least ten minutes and there was a slight mix up of our order, which eventuated in at least 4 different staff members approaching our table to try and view our receipt on our table, which felt a little intrusive.
I’ll just say this though – San Churros is well worth the wait for a table if you are a chocolate fiend!
