Before I moved in with A, I lived only 1km away from a Gelare outlet. It was a common occurrence that if a friend came over, we’d walk the distance to gorge ourselves on waffles and ice cream and then roll ourselves home. Even though I’ve had a lot of exposure to the deliciousness of waffles, my taste buds still do backflips whenever I have one. I couldn’t help but get excited when I heard about Superstar Waffles in Northbridge.
Superstar Waffles is located at the back of the 189 Arcade on William Street in Northbridge. I’ve been to Shop 8 a few times now, and each time I go there is a different cafe and concept. Superstar Waffles is a little establishment that is dedicated to making exciting waffles. It also features a large range of T2 teas, milkshakes and coffees for you to sip on while you eat.
The menu has some amazing waffle creations on it, including The Berrylicious waffle (served with a triple berry compote), the S’more Waffle (marshmallow fluff and nutella), the Warm Apple Pie waffle (warm apple pie filling topped with muesli crumble) and the Peanut Butter Mousse waffle (served with peanut butter mousse and oreo crumble). There are also options to add extras, including chocolate or vanilla ice cream, crushed peanuts, mini marshmallows, fruits and sauces to your waffle for a small additional price.
I ordered the Banoffee Waffle ($9.50), which came with fresh bananas, a bed of warm toffee, fresh cream and a sprinkle of biscuit crumble. I also ordered a side of vanilla ice cream for an additional $1. A ordered the Classic Waffle ($7.50), which came with a shot of maple syrup, freshly whipped cream and typically comes with a dusting of icing sugar (but A ordered her waffle without it).
When the Banoffee Waffle arrived at the table, I was immediately taken back by the size of it. There were two large pieces of waffles, a huge scoop of ice cream and a towering dollop of fresh cream. The warm toffee sauce tasted quite simple on its own, however when it was combined with the banana, waffle and ice cream it was a winning combination! The waffle itself was crispy and the ‘sprinkle of biscuit crumble’ added an additional kick of sugar. This waffle was delicious!
A said that she enjoyed her Classic Waffle, which was smaller in size but had the same crispness to it. She ended up having a similar experience to me, as we shared my ice cream, banana and toffee sauce.
All in all, I really liked the concept of Superstar Waffles. The waffles were both delicious but the venue was also cosy and comfortable, although it was quite warm inside. I will definitely return to try one of the other interesting waffle combinations soon.
