While I was doing my teaching practical, I taught a book to a class of year 8 students which featured time-travel sequences. One of these sequences featured the Aztecs meeting the Spanish explorer, Hernán Cortés, and providing him with chocolate. At the same time as my students, I learnt that chocolate was discovered by the Aztecs and was later used for medicinal purposes by the Spanish monks before it became popular worldwide in the 1800s.
The Chocolateria San Churros chain has 7 stores around the Perth area, including Leederville, Northbridge, Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour, Mandurah, Rockingham and Subiaco. I really like this chain as they use 100% real cocoa butter in all of their chocolate products. I have been to nearly all of their stores in Perth on numerous occasions and I have yet to be disappointed.
The Leederville store is my local and is often the place I head to for a girly catchup. On one occasion, B and I ordered a serving of Churros for one (3 churros and a pot of melted couverture chocolate) as well as a Strawberry Bizcocho (a four-tier dessert made with chocolate cake, strawberries, chilled custard and milk chocolate).
The Strawberry Bizcocho was the standout for both of us, which was surprising as I wouldn’t typically order it due to the custard element. The chocolate ‘cake’ was similar to a rich brownie and the mixture of the custard with the milk chocolate was a perfect combination. The fresh strawberries added a bit of tart flavour and the end result is a four-tier dessert that has a mountain of different flavours and textures.
We also ordered a hot chocolate to share, as we were unsure if we could finish one each on top of the two very rich desserts. Chocolateria San Churros makes their chocolate using only 100% real cocoa butter and there are no vegetable oil or other inferior substitutes involved in the process. This chocolate is then used in the making of their famous hot chocolates and the end result is a rich, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth flavour that makes you feel as though you are drinking liquid chocolate. They are seriously delicious!
On another occassion, my friend Ashlee and I headed to the Leederville store on a beautiful Spring day. The large folded windows were open, allowing us to sit inside but with a view overlooking Oxford Street. Seeing as though it was quite a warm day, we decided to order cold desserts. Ashlee ordered the Cookie Cha Cha milkshake (featuring crushed cookies, white chocolate and vanilla ice-cream), which was really thick and rich. It was served in a large, tall glass with whipped cream on top. Ashlee said that she really enjoyed it but was unable to finish it due to the volume! I had a small try of this milkshake and it really did taste like a cookie milkshake, as it was thick and had small chunks of cookies within it. It was also delicious!
I ordered the Ice-Cream Sundae (3 scoops of chocolate ice cream, a chocolate brownie, whipped cream and melted chocolate). The ice-cream sundae was huge when it arrived and attracted a few stares from other customers. The Chocolateria San Churro chain makes their ice-cream using real chocolate and the end result is a rich and creamy ice-cream which isn’t too sweet. The brownie and milk chocolate sauce added the sweet aspect to this dish and it was an excellently balanced sundae which was able to satisfy my chocolate cravings for a week afterwards!
After an especially lovely evening at El Compa in Northbridge, B and I decided to make a quick stop at the Northbridge outlet of Chocolateria San Churros. This was the first outlet that offered table service, which was a lovely aspect of this outlet. We sat down at the last available table in the very busy store and it wasn’t long before we were greeted by a waitress. We ordered a hot chocolate to share as well as a serving of churros. We were once again impressed with the hot chocolate and churros and left with a very satisfied smile on our faces.
After a lovely date night dinner at Satsuki in Subiaco, A walked me over to the Chocolateria San Churros nearby for dessert. She ordered us a plate of strawberries and chocolate dipping sauce to share, as well as a hot chocolate. We arrived at close to 10pm on a Saturday evening and the place was still exceptionally busy. We found a table at the back and waited for our goodies.
It wasn’t long before our treats arrived. The strawberries were surprisingly fresh and of course, went really well with the chocolate dipping sauce. As always, the churros were crunchy and had a perfect amount of cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on them. Both A and I really enjoyed this light but appetising dessert.
The Chocolateria San Churros chain also offers a collection of cakes, taste plates and chocolate truffles in each restaurant. I love the aspect of this chain continually bringing out new desserts to try, as you can never feel bored with their desserts at these chains, no matter how often you frequent them.
I highly recommend a try of any Chocolateria San Churros dishes if you enjoy decadent chocolate sweets.
