I’m a self-proclaimed foodie but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a quick, healthy, cheap but oh-so-tasty meal. For my birthday last year, I choose to have my birthday dinner at Guzman Y Gomez in Perth – just because I love this chain so much!
Yes, it’s a chain that is a fast food vendor but there’s a difference – healthy, Mexican cuisine that tastes delicious. The premise is simple – delicious Mexican street-food.
There’s two steps for choosing your meal – pick a style and then choose your filling. There are many styles available including burritos, soft or hard tacos, quesadillas and nachos. The fillings range from chicken, beef, fish and veggie options. If you are nutrition conscious, Guzman Y Gomez have a handy nutrition guide, which tells you how many calories, protein, fat, carbs and sodium are in within each option. There’s also a condiment station, featuring three different Tabasco sauces for your choosing, Spanish onion, jalapenos and coriander salsa.
My typical order is the Steak Chipotle (spicy) burrito bowl ($11.90), which consists of rice, cheddar cheese, vegetarian black beans, salsa and filling (this is also gluten free). I also generally add brown rice (+$1) and guacamole (+$2) to my order, which are recommended additions. These burrito bowls are always generous in size and the mixture of flavours makes for a very appetising meal.
My second go-to dish is the nachos ($11.50) with steak chipotle. I love nachos but barely order it if we are out, as soggy nachos are common. However, Guzman Y Gomez’s nachos are never soggy and the corn chips, melted Jack cheese, vegetarian black beans, salsa, and guacamole are all made with fresh ingredients. This is also another gluten-free dish (woot!) and delicious!
If you haven’t tried Guzman Y Gomez, I highly recommend it. If it was a worthy birthday dinner, than it’s an even better Friday night option that’s healthy, tasty and will leave you change for ice cream afterwards (because all good meals should end in ice-cream!). The Canberra City outlet also have a selection of alcoholic beverages available to pair with your Mexican food.
