Due to the Christmas season being upon us, my team at work organised a Friday night dinner and drinks at The Sovereign Arms in Joondalup a few weeks ago. When it was being organised, there was a lot of discussion about the venue, with a few Joondalup locals saying that it offers excellent pub food and has lots of food choices available.
The Sovereign is a family friendly British pub and their website states that they focus on organic and locally sourced produce. There is also a focus on premium wine, champagne and spirits and an extensive range of premium imported beers on tap.
When we arrived on the Friday evening, I was surprised at the size of the venue. Due to its location within the Lakeside Shopping Centre, I thought that it would be a small pub but it was the opposite, with a large outside area, dining area and bar area. One of my colleagues bought the first round of drinks for approximately 8 of us, which ended up costing her under $40. We were all very surprised, as typically you pay $7 -$12 for a glass of wine or pint of beer in other pubs around Perth.
After a bit of chatting outside in their beer garden, we headed inside to the dining room to order dinner. The helpful wait staff quickly showed us to our table and provided menus. There were two menus available for the night – the usual food menu and a set Christmas menu, which includes Turkey Breast with Chipolatas, stuffing and seasonal vegetables, finished with cranberry and gravy or Roasted Champagne Ham with a pineapple and kahlua puree served with seasonal vegetables. I decided to order my favourite pub meal – the Chicken Parmigiana ($22.90).
The Chicken Parmigiana’s crumbed chicken breast topped with tomato concasse and grilled cheese was made with quality chicken and had melted cheese on top of a lovely tomato sauce. The accompanying steak fries were golden crunchy and the asian style salad was fresh and well-seasoned. Overall, this dish was one of the nicest (and largest!) chicken parmigiana’s I’ve had and I left extremely satisfied.
I wasn’t able to take photos of all the dishes we had during our evening however I couldn’t help but take one of the Christmas set menu special. This special is available until the 24th of December and was another well-received dish from those who ordered one of the two specials available.
In our large table of 15 people, there was not one complaint in regards to the food. One of the reoccurring comments was how generous the serving sizes were. When I looked around the table, there were another two dishes which caught my eye – the Chicken Galliano ($24.90) (pan-fried chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto then flamed in galliano with cream, mushrooms and garlic served on a fragrant rice risotto cake and sprinkled with lightly toasted almonds) and the Chicken Saltimbocca ($25.90) (chicken breast sautéed with sage, bacon, mushrooms and parmesan, topped with mozzarella and served on a creamed potato stack). When I return, I will definitely order one of these dishes as they looked and smelt amazing.
I highly recommend a visit to The Sovereign Arms if you are in Joondalup and looking for a great pub with friendly service, reasonably priced drinks and tasty food.
