Our favourite breakfast during our Melbourne trip was at The Hardware Société, which A discovered through Urbanspoon. We both decided we had to try it after we noticed it had 6994 votes but held a 90% positive rating – a pretty good indication it was worth a visit.
When we arrived, we had to wait for a table. During our half an hour wait, A and I ordered a coffee to enjoy in a takeaway cup and instantly I was impressed. The coffee had a chocolately taste and was made expertly well. It was so good that I broke my one coffee a day rule to have another over breakfast.
On the counter, there’s a variety of sweets available including macarons, biscuits, pastries and muffins. A grabbed a muffin to go with her coffee and gave it rave reviews.
We were seated at a long communal table and ordered quickly, as A and I had already muddled over what we’d order in our waiting time.
For A’s breakfast, she ordered Scrambled Eggs ‘Deux’ – with chorizo, prawn, pickled zucchini, membrillo aioli ($20). Luckily, A was exceptionally hungry as the size of her breakfast was humongous. A loved the combination of flavours, even though I was a little perplexed at the thought of prawns and scrambled eggs together in the morning but A assured me that it was very enjoyable.
I ordered the Poached Eggs ‘Un’, which came with a bacon slab, jamon and pea croquettes and smoked paprika aioli ($21). This has to be one of the best breakfast combinations I’ve had in a while, as the additional of the croquettas on the side were fantastic and made the breakfast a little more special than typical poached eggs and bacon. The croquettas were packed with flavour and perfectly golden and crunchy on their exterior.
Hardware Société was a fantastic breakfast venue and I wholeheartedly understand why it is so popular and constantly busy. It has to be one of the best places I’ve been to in regards to be an all-rounder – awesome service, excellent food, fantastic coffee and there was absolutely nothing to fault.
