A and I had been talking about trying one of the fresh produce delivery services available in Perth for quite a few months. Luckily, The Lettuce Shop made contact with me and offered a box for feedback. We couldn’t wait to try it and a week later, I came home from work and found a polystyrene box full of fresh, local produce at my doorstep. An excellent way to kick off a Monday evening!
There are two main reasons why A and I have been dying to try these services – someone else does the leg work of sourcing the best, local produce and then delivers it to you. I love this idea as I often lose interest in heading to my local farmer’s market every weekend as I’d much rather be doing other things, like catching up with friends, sleeping or staying curled up in bed until a coffee withdrawal migraine kicks in…
The Lettuce Shop sources their fruit and vegetables from the Canning Vale markets – directly from local farmers. This allows you the best of both worlds – fresh, local produce but without the hassle. In their online shop, The Lettuce Shop also tells you ‘what’s in’ season, helping you choose the freshest produce available.
When I opened our box, I was pleasantly surprised with how much produce was packed inside. When I layed it all out, I was happy to see that it took over an entire bench to itself. A and I contemplated if it was going to be too much to eat in a week but somehow we got through it!
In my box, I received the following items*:
- Bannister Downs Café au Lait ($3.99 ea)
- West n Fresh Lemon Yoghurt ($5.99)
- Poach Pear Pork & Sage Terrine ($10.99)
- Holy Smoke Portuguese Chicken Paté ($6.49)
- Holy Smoke Bourbon & Maple Syrup Smoked Salmon ($11.99)
- Princi Smallgoods Assorted Salami ($6.59)
- Celery half ($1.69)
- Packham Pears from Donnybrook ($6.99/kg)
- Naval oranges ($4.99/kg)
- Button Mushrooms 200g ($3.79)
- Zucchini ($1.79ea)
- Brown Onions ($2.59kg)
- Royal Blue Potatoes ($4.69/kg)
- Green Festival Lettuce ($2.89ea)
- 1kg of West Australian Carrots ($1.89) (Grown in Myalup)
- 750g bag of Carnavan Grown Bananas ($5.89)
- A variety of Apples (ranging from $5.49 – $7.49 a kilo)
- Mandarins ($6.59/kg)
- Broccoli ($7.99/kg)
- Snow peas 200g ($3.59 ea)
The fresh fruit and veggies were really fresh and the majority lasted well into their second week. They were definitely not refrigerated for an extended period of time (unlike the majority of stuff you get from your local supermarket!)
As much as I loved cooking and eating the fresh fruit and veg, my favourite part of the box was the inclusion of other local produce in the form of gourmet products. I love Holy Smoke products, which I was introduced to last year when A and I visited Pemberton and we were excited to try the Bourbon & Maple Syrup Smoked Salmon. I also enjoyed trying the West N Fresh yoghurt and the Princi smallgoods – the assortment of salami were delicious! And of course, it was great to see my old favourites – Bannister Downs Café au Lait and Poach Pear Pork & Sage Terrine.
For the first few nights, I served some of the produce as an apéritif to munch on while we cooked. This was typically served with a glass of white and a fresh baguette or crackers.
I love that The Lettuce Shop provides you with a choice on what goes into your box – either you individually chose each item or you can select the easy option of ordering one of their seasonal boxes. Some examples of the boxes are seasonal fruit boxes, seasonal veggie boxes, or seasonal mixed boxes.
The Lettuce Shop’s website is super easy to navigate and includes categories on the side to highlight specials, smallgoods, veggies, fruit, milk and juice and cheese. When you order your box of goodies, you can also order Karvan coffee, which is an award winning, locally roasted 100% Arabica coffee. Oh, and if you order from the The Lettuce Shop and you don’t find the item satisfactory, The Lettuce Shop will provide you with a refund for that item. Perfect for those who are a little unsure!
If the idea of home delivery somehow doesn’t suit you, The Lettuce Shop is also open for your fresh produce needs in their Belmont warehouse (U5/151 Belmont Ave, Belmont). The next opening will be on Saturday 24th August from 8.30am to 12.30. You’ll be able to also buy products from other local businesses including Littlesweet Baking, Grounded Soaps, Karvan Coffee, Katie Joy’s Free Range Eggs and Pampered Pooch Parties and Bakery Treats. Other dates will be announced on The Lettuce Shop’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
I highly recommend The Lettuce Shop, which provides efficient service and quality local produce.
Many thanks to Peggy and Cassandra from The Lettuce Shop for this complimentary box of excellent fresh produce.
