Every now and again, A and I crave a decent steak and a nice glass of red. We’ve yet to find somewhere in Canberra that serves excellent steaks (suggestions welcomed!), so A and I opted to visit a favourite of ours – Steersons Steakhouse in Darling Harbour.
Steersons Steakhouse is located on King Street Wharf and has a balcony with a view of darling harbour. When we arrived, we were told that there was no availability for a table inside (as we hadn’t booked), but luckily this suited us perfectly. When we were seated on the balcony, we were also provided with a gas heater to ourselves. This meant that even though it was winter, we were very comfortable sitting on the balcony with a view of the harbour.
Our first point of call was to review the wine list, which is extensive but has an excellent selection of wines by the glass. I ordered a glass of the 2010 Kilikanoon Blocks Rd Cabernet Sauvignon ($14) – which paired brilliantly with my steak.
A ordered freshly baked damper with salted butter ($5.90) to start with and it was an excellent way to start. When it arrived, it was still warm and the salted butter was a perfect, simple accompaniment.
Both A and I ordered similarly, with our choice of the petite (220g) rib-eye ($26.90) served with a house salad as well as the Surf n’ Turf extra (roasted Australian tiger prawns and béarnaise sauce for an additional $9.90). Our steaks were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The quality of the steaks is high, with Steersons only using select suppliers based on their quality of produce and those who source the finest beef from around Australia. However, everything on the plate was executive perfectly and was of the highest quality – from the steak, to the prawns, to the béarnaise sauce to even the salad.
We couldn’t help but order sides as well, including thick-cut chips with rosemary salt ($7.90) and steamed green beans with toasted almonds ($9.90). Again, the quality of the produce and cooking was exceptional.
We chose not to order desserts, but luckily we were still able to finish our meal on a sweet note – our bill arrived with chocolate coated coffee beans. It was a simple gesture but an excellent way to end a meal. Perfection!
On a side note, Steersons Steakhouse state that they aim to provide excellent food even if it isn’t steak, and there are vegetarian and seafood options on the menu. Their full sized steaks come in a variety of cuts and are served with red wine jus and your choice of chips, baked potato or mash. There are also a variety of steak extras available, including blue cheese butter, green peppercorn sauce and mushroom sauce.
A and I thought our whole night was perfect – the food, ambience, service and execution were all above par. In comparison to something like Rockpool Bar and Grill, Steersons is an excellent competitor, with lower prices but similar quality. If you are looking for a fantastic steakhouse, Steersons should be at the top of your list.
