I’m a strong believer that everyone needs a local eatery that is their ‘go-to’. In Perth, A and I had Ha-Lu in Mount Hawthorn and I’m happy to say that we’ve now found our go-to in Canberra – Thai Garden Restaurant in Dickson. It’s a small eatery that manages to meet all of our requirements – fantastic Thai food, reasonably priced, generous in size and friendly service.
We’ve been quite a few times and have tried a variety of dishes, both in house and take away. My favourite dish to order is the Pad See Ew ($15.80), consisting of stir fried soft rice noodles with egg, Chinese broccoli and chicken. The noodles aren’t oily and the quality of the ingredients are winning factors.
A’s favourite noodle dish is Thai Garden’s pad Thai with either chicken ($15.80) or prawns ($17.80). A likes that this version isn’t overly sweet.
We’ve also ordered red curry with bamboo shoots, capsicum, peas and eggplant with our favourite protein selection of duck ($18.80). The curry is perfectly balanced and generous in size.
Other recommended items are the fresh spring rolls, fried spring rolls and tom yum soup.
During my next visit to Thai Garden Restaurant, I’ll be ordering one of my favourite desserts from childhood – fried ice cream ($9.80). An added bonus is that Thai Garden allows you to choose between chocolate, strawberry or caramel topping (but everyone knows that caramel topping is best!)
BYO wine is available for $3 per wine bottle or 50c per beer bottle.
